In the spirit of embracing diversity and inclusivity, we acknowledge and celebrate July as a significant month that holds special importance for two essential movements: Disability Pride and Minority Mental Health. During this month, we come together to recognize the invaluable contributions and resilience of individuals with disabilities, honoring their unique experiences and perspectives. Simultaneously, we uplift mental health as a dimension of student identity that is important to consider in advising redesign. Minority Mental Health month spotlights marginalized communities, fostering understanding and compassion towards those struggling with mental health issues. As we champion these movements, we reaffirm our commitment to building a more equitable and compassionate society that uplifts and empowers every individual, regardless of their abilities or mental health status. July serves as a reminder that by embracing our differences, we create a stronger, more vibrant world where everyone can thrive and find their rightful place.

Late last month, the U.S. Supreme Court moved to dismantle race-conscious admissions, a tool used by institutions to build diverse and inclusive environments that support the learning and engagement of students. The Advising Success Network maintains that race-conscious approaches are necessary in the work of identifying and addressing racial inequities in higher education and we will continue to focus on the strengths, talents, and aspirations of Black, Latinx/a/o, Indigenous, Asian, Pacific Islander students, and poverty-affected students. This month, we are reading about the ways institutions continue to address racism following the SCOTUS decision, and highlighting how Holistic Advising Award Winners have centered holistic advising as a tool for educational equity.

Mission

Our mission is to help institutions build a culture of student success, with a focus on Black, Latinx/a/o, Indigenous, Asian, and Pacific Islander students, and poverty-affected students, by identifying, building, and scaling equitable and holistic advising solutions that support all facets of the student experience.

Vision

Our vision is a higher education landscape that has eliminated race and income as predictors of student success through a reformed approach to advising, in which all students are supported through a seamless, personalized postsecondary experience that creates better personal, academic, and professional outcomes.
