This Black History Month, we reflect on Gloria Ladson-Billing’s 2006 call to action to “address the educational debt.” ASN strives to address the educational debt by raising awareness from an institutional perspective about how legacy practices and policies enable or impede student success, and impact student economic mobility and personal, academic, and career success.
Below, we highlight resources available to practitioners to bring about a higher education landscape that has eliminated race and ethnicity as predictors of student success. Thank you for joining us on this journey.
What We're Reading
The Business Case for Sustainable Advising Redesign
We are proud to publish two new resources designed for institutional leaders to implement sustainable advising redesign initiatives in ways that support equitable student success.
From ASN core partner the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) and rpkGroup, the Senior Leadership Primer presents a high-level overview of the business model case for investing in equitable holistic advising redesign through a return on investment (ROI) perspective.
The associated toolkit expands upon the primer and provides actionable steps and artifacts to execute an effective resourcing and sustainability strategy.
(2023 Update) Knowing Our Students: Understanding & Designing for Success
From ASN core partner Achieving the Dream comes a guidebook designed for institutional leaders and student success teams who are ready to talk openly about the students they serve and who are eager to learn practical strategies from national experts and peer institutions.
Research shows that professional learning (often called “faculty development”) has the potential to transform teaching and advance equity, learning and student success. Yet notable gaps in practice undercut its impact.
This report can inform the strategic action needed to realize the promise of professional learning at our nation’s equity-focused campuses.
ASN had a team on-site at our partner Achieving the Dream’s DREAM conference in Chicago earlier this month. Thank you to those who attended our session “Advising Student Network: Integrating Career Advising throughout the Student Experience,” on Wednesday, February 15. If you were unable to make the session, the following materials are available for your use:
Our mission is to help institutions build a culture of student success, with a focus on Black, Latinx, Indigenous, Asian, and Pacific Islander students, as well as students from low-income backgrounds, by identifying, building, and scaling equitable and holistic advising solutions that support all facets of the student experience.
Vision
Our vision is a higher education landscape that has eliminated race and income as predictors of student success through a reformed approach to advising, in which all students are supported through a seamless, personalized postsecondary experience that creates better personal, academic, and professional outcomes.
